How to clean out the Rinnai Water Heater
Tools Needed:

Procedure:
- Turn the bottom ball valves on the cold and hot water to the closed position.
- Loosen the filter on the cold inlet with the channel locks. There will be a little bit of residual water that comes out of it.
- Rinse and clean the screens of the filter.
- Turn the ball valve for cold water back to the open position then quickly back to the closed position. This will flush out any leftovers that may still be on the threads for where the filter goes.
- Reinstall the filter. Screw the filter back up using your hands. tighten the water filter with the channel locks
- Turn the cold and hot water ball valves back to the open position.
- Make sure the red light next to “In Use” turns back on.
- Repeat this step on the rest of the water heaters. Only do one at a time.

How to Flush out the Unit
Supplies Needed:

- A 5-gallon pail
Note: Tommy's recommends using white vinegar (non-diluted) to flush the system
Interval:
Should be completed every 6 months
Procedure:
- Turn off the power at the controller.
- Disconnect the electrical power to the water heater.
- Close the shutoff valves on both the hot-water and cold-water lines.
- Connect the pump outlet hose to the cold-water line at the service valve.
- Connect the drain hose to the hot-water line at the service valve.
- Pour four gallons of the un-diluted virgin, food-grade white vinegar into a pail.
- Place the drain hose and the feed hose to the pump inlet into the cleaning solution.
- Open both service valves on the hot water and cold-water lines.
- Operate the pump and allow the vinegar to circulate through the water heater for at least 1 hour at a rate of 4 gallons per minute (15.1 liters per minute).
- Turn off the pump.
- Rinse the vinegar from the water heater as follows:
- Remove the free end of the drain hose from the pail. Place in a sink or outside to drain.
- Close the service valve and the open cold-water shut-off valve. Do not the open hot-water shutoff valve.
- Allow water to flow through the water heater for five minutes.
- Close the cold-water shutoff valve. When the unit has finished draining, remove the in-line filter at the cold-water inlet and clean out any residue. Place the filter back into the unit and open the cold-water valve.
- Close the hot-water service valve and open the hot-water shutoff valve.
- Disconnect all hose
- Restore electrical power to the water heater.
